BRIEF
HISTORY OF MUMBAI |
| |
Mumbai
is a collection of seven islands. It originally belonged to
koli fisher folks. Mumbai was ruled by the Hindu dynasty followed
by Muslims then by Portuguese and lastly by British.
The Portuguese gifted Mumbai as a dowry to Catherine Braganza
when she got married to England's Charles II in 1661. The British
government developed Bombay in a trading port since it had a
fine harbour.
Bombay played a very important role in the independence struggle
by hosting the Indian National congress in 1885 and Quit India
Movement in 1942. Colaba is known as traveler's paradise and
has got a decent range of hotel's and restaurants.
The two of the city's best-known landmarks are gateway of India
and Taj Mahal hotel. The name of the city was change from Bombay
to Mumbai in 1996. The name Mumbai come from the goddess Mumbadevi.
There is a beach called Chowpatty, which is very much used by
the local in the evenings after the hard day's work.
Mumbai is known as the commercial capital of India and the busiest
city all over India |

say the best way to see Mumbai is on foot. We stumbled on this
wonderful heritage spine, which extends from Flora Fountain
to Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus (V.T.). Take a walk along D.N.
Road starting from Flora Fountain with the oriental Building
in your left hand side as you face north.
The pictorial representation shown above acts as a guide to
the various heritage buildings each with its own unique architecture.
Most of the buildings were designed by noted architects of the
time including F.W. Stevens and William Emerson.
The entire stretch is classified as a heritage district. Among
the special buildings are the Petit Library and the Oriental
